#Lostwithus is the tagline of the photo point here. The ochre cliffs, hippie vibes, the peppy nightlife, and the calm beauty of the Arabian Sea don’t fail to justify those words. The place is none other than the Pearl of Arabian Sea, Varkala. Undoubtedly a backpacker’s must-visit destination, Varkala has much more to offer.
Varkala is a town that lies on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala, renowned for Varkala Beach, the only cliff beach in Kerala. The Varkala Beach aka Papanasam Beach is believed to purge the body of impurities and the soul of all sins. Close to the beach lies the 2,000-year-old Janardana Swami Temple, which is an important Vaishnavaite shrine in India and is often monikered as Dakshin Kashi. The temple displays an ancient bell donated by the captain of a Dutch vessel that sank near Varkala without causing any casualties.
The best and the not-to-miss activity one should undertake here is a take a stroll out in the Varkala Cliff, preferably at night. North Cliff in Varkala has many cozy eateries and small shops all along the path selling various products from different parts of the country. The western music playing in the background will a bonus. The cliff is also the starting point for the adventure activities in Varkala, like paragliding.
Varkala is not just about Papanasham Beach. Off the cliff and over the north lies many beaches like Odayam Beach, Edava Beach, Black Sand Beach, and Kappil Beach. Most of these beaches will be off the crowd and can be chosen for a quiet sunset time. There are many places that provide surfing lessons, yoga lessons around this area. One can venture on it after checking their authenticity.
Of all these, Kappil needs a special mention. Kappil beach offers a bewitching landscape with its serried coconut trees, tiered casuarina trees, gushing sea, and green backwaters. One can even take a dip in the shallow backwaters, which is quite chilly even in the soaring noons.
So, if you plan to put your feet up, Varkala has the right ingredients to offer.
